Performing Protest
by Proto-type

Since 2015 we have been working on the Truth to Power Project – a socially-engaged exploration of power, democracy, truth-telling, protest, privacy, conspiracy, and control. The project began as a response to the UK and global political climate and has since manifested as a wealth of creative, cultural, and participatory activity that seeks to shed light on the complex, hidden systems that govern how we live our lives. DEAD CATS (showing as part of the festival) is part of this project and came from multiple conversations about “what makes us angry?”, and “how can we use our work to affect change?”
In this workshop we’ll ask you to make your protest, and your politics visible. Led by Co-Artistic directors of Proto-type, Rachel Baynton and Gillian Lees, you’ll explore some of our tactics and strategies for writing, devising, and staging contemporary political theatre and performance.

No previous experience required – please bring phones, or any small handheld equipment you might like to use to record/document/share your work.

Seit 2015 arbeiten wir am Truth to Power Project – einer sozial engagierten Erkundung von Macht, Demokratie, Wahrheit, Protest, Privatsphäre, Verschwörung und Kontrolle. Das Projekt begann als Antwort auf das politische Klima in England und weltweit und hat sich seitdem in einer Fülle von kreativen, kulturellen und partizipativen Aktivitäten manifestiert, die ein Licht auf die verborgenen und komplexen Systeme werfen wollen, die bestimmen, wie wir unser Leben leben. DEAD CATS ist Teil dieses Projekts und entstand aus zahlreichen Gesprächen zu den Fragen „Was macht uns wütend?“ und „Wie können wir unsere Arbeit nutzen, um Veränderung zu bewirken?“.
In diesem Workshop sollt ihr euren politischen Protest sichtbar machen. Ihr erforscht eine Auswahl unserer Taktiken und Strategien, um zetgenössisches politisches Theater zu schreiben, zu entwickeln und zu inszenieren.

Keine Vorerfahrung nötig – bitte bringt Smartphones oder anderes handliches Equipment mit, um eure Ergebnisse aufzunehmen, zu dokumentieren und zu teilen.

Ways of Staging: Adapting A Seventh Man

Pinchbeck & Smith will deliver a practical workshop around the themes of their touring show – A Seventh Man. Both Michael and Ollie are theatre-makers and educators who work at different universities in the UK. They present exercises used to develop the immersive performance to introduce a deeper understanding of the possibilities of experimentation in performance, combining choreography of text and movement with repetition, collision and echo. They also introduce the way in which experimental adaptation of both non-fiction and fiction can inform the dramaturgy of devised performance. The workshop will explore and explode the key themes from the show: journey, migration, loss, memory, the creative process and audience experience.

In diesem praktischen Workshop arbeiten Pinchbeck & Smith mit den Themen ihrer Tour-Produktion A Seventh Man. Michael und Ollie sind beide Theatermacher, die an unterschiedlichen Universitäten in England arbeiten. Sie präsentieren Techniken, die bei der Entwicklung der immersiven Performance genutzt wurden, um ein tieferes Verständnis für die Möglichkeiten von Experimenten in Performances zu vermitteln, indem sie Textchoreografie und Bewegung mit Wiederholung, Kollision und Echo verbinden. Außerdem führen sie vor, wie experimentelle Adaption von Nicht-Fiktionalem und Fiktion die Dramaturgie von Stückentwicklungen beeinflussen kann. Der Workshop wird die Schlüsselthemen der Produktion A Seventh Man erforschen und zersprengen: Reise, Migration, Verlust, Erinnerung, der kreative Prozess und Publikumserfahrungen.

theaterszene europa x IMPULSE THEATER FESTIVAL
LERNEN AUS DEM LOCKDOWN? // TABLETALK(S)

Das IMPULSE THEATER FESTIVAL hat mit seiner Gesprächs-Reihe „LERNEN AUS DEM LOCKDOWN?“ zur gleichnamigen Publikation in den vergangenen zwei Jahren untersucht, welche Auswirkungen die durch die Corona-Pandemie bedingten Maßnahmen auf die Freien Darstellenden Künste hatten und immer noch haben. Im Rahmen von theaterszene europa findet nun in Tischgesprächen ein Austausch mit den Künstler:innen des Festivals und interessierten Kolleg:innen aus NRW statt: Welche Folgen hat die Pandemie in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern? Wie unterscheiden sich Maßnahmen und Folgen? Welche Lehren ziehen wir daraus und voneinander?

In the last two years the IMPULSE THEATER FESTIVAL has explored with its talk series „LEARNING FROM THE LOCKDOWN?“ and the published book of the same name, which effects the sanctions had and still have, which were caused by the Covid-pandemic. During theaterszene europa an exchange between the participating artists and interested colleagues will take place in the form of tabletalks: Which consequences did and does the pandemic have in various European countries? How do sanctions and consequences differ? What do we from those consequences and from each other?
